Q&A with bride Heather: Dreams Tulum

What made you decide on having a destination wedding? I did not want some complicated and ridiculously expensive wedding that I had to invite all these people to. I wanted something small and intimate and something that wouldn’t just be a 4 hour event. I wanted lasting memories with my friends and family and I wanted my friends and family to get to know each other.  A vacation together was the perfect way to do that.

What made you decide on the destination/resort/venue? Originally, I had wanted to have the wedding at this resort we had stayed at in Playa Del Carmen recently. We saw lots of wedding while we were there and it just seemed so perfect. However, Audrey described Dreams Tulum and we kept coming back to it in our conversations. I did LOTS of research and by far Dreams had better reviews. Plus, Dreams is in Tulum, which is a much quieter area and cleaner than where we were planning. And I would NEVER EVER change back to that other venue

What was the biggest difficulty in planning your destination wedding? Waiting for people to book the trip. I couldn’t do much planning without the numbers. We sent out invitations in June for the next May. Some people booked like a month before….including my dad.

What was the highlight of the experience and what was the biggest surprise? The highlight was definitely the hotel itself. It was a beautiful place, delish food and drinks, the staff were so nice, nighttime was super fun, and the beach is so beautiful. There were no surprises…..everything was more than what I expected it to be. I guess I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the spa. Usually don’t go to the spa that much if at all….but I think I was there everyday. It was so relaxing.

How well was the resort and your Onsite Wedding Coordinator to work with? Landy – my wedding coordinator – was fabulous. I didn’t have any concerns regarding decor or anything like that, but I misread a lot in the wedding package I chose and so I definitely misbudgeted. So I got really frustrated and she was always nice and accommodating.

If your best friend were planning a destination wedding what would your advice be to her? Destination wedding….all the way. Very very easy. I feel like I was NEVER stressed. I highly recommend this hotel to. There is absolutely nothing I would change. My hair and makeup were perfect, the ceremony the reception the photos the video the food everything was amazing. Plan ahead!

Was there anything that you would change looking back? I would really read the various packages and not just skim it in a hurry. lol. I didn’t realize a dance floor and lighting didn’t come with my package and few other things so I was a mess when I found out I had seriously under budgeted. But that is all. I would still do it all the exact same. We didn’t get a DJ we brought our own speaker and computer and used spotify, but if you have a large group (we had 25) I recommend a DJ. But we had no problem getting and keeping our party going.

1. What made you decide on having a destination wedding?

We chose to have a destination wedding for several reasons.  Both of our families live out of the country (South Korea and Scotland), so we figured they should get a vacation if they were going to fly half way across the world for our wedding.  Destination weddings are also a great way to have an intimate wedding with those that you cherish and love.
We also loved the idea of getting married on the beach.  Another great plus was the cost savings.  If we were to get married at home, we would have to invite way more people, which in turn would cost much more for a less spectacular wedding.  I also loved the idea of not having to do everything (choosing vendors, photographers, etc).  It was really nice having to make less decisions and still getting exactly what I wanted.

2. What made you decide on the destination/resort/venue?

We had been to Riviera Maya twice and loved it both times.  We actually considered going to the same resort, but after looking at all of the options Hannah sent us, we chose Dreams Tulum.  We wanted an intimate experience with a gorgeous setting, and we got both!  The resort is absolutely gorgeous and made us feel like royalty the entire stay.  I highly recommend Dreams Tulum.  We talked about coming back every year to celebrate our anniversary!

3. What was the biggest difficulty in planning your destination wedding?

The biggest difficulty for me was imaging what everything would look like.  I am a perfectionist and need to see/touch things, so emailing pictures and communicating my vision was challenging.  I also like to do everyone myself, so trusting the wedding coordinator was tough.  Nayeli, the wedding coordinator, definitely pulled through though.  I did not have to worry about a thing.

4. What was the highlight of the experience and what was the biggest surprise?

The highlight of the experience was the weather.  It was all sunshine up until our wedding day.  The forecast was terrible – there was a 50% chance of rain during the ceremony and 90% during cocktail hour and reception (everything was scheduled to be on the beach).  Nayeli knew that I wanted a beach ceremony unless it was pouring, so they switched out the chair cushions multiple times to make sure our guests had dry seats to sit on.  By some miracle, it only sprinkled during the ceremony and cocktail hour.  The dinner reception got moved into the convention center due to the weather, and Nayeli more than made up for the venue change.  It was absolutely gorgeous and romantic!  It was more beautiful than I could’ve imagined.  I was breathless.

5. How well was the resort and your Onsite Wedding Coordinator to work with?

The resort went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and well taken care of.  Everyone from the bartender to the housekeeper had warm smiles and truly looked happy to take care of us.  Nayeli, the onsite wedding coordinator, was patient, thorough, and made sure everything was perfect.  She really made me feel at ease by making sure I did not have to worry about a thing.

6.  If your best friend were planning a destination wedding what would your advice be to her?

My advice would be to trust your wedding coordinator.  She will take care of everything.  Also, make sure to spend time with your loved ones and show them how much it means that they came to celebrate this moment.  Soak in the entire day.  It goes by way too fast.  Upgrade your photography package and get the one that includes all of the photos, it’s worth it.  Book a hair trial.

S R (54)
7. Was there anything that you would change looking back?

Not spending too much time in the sun the day before the wedding!  The back of my dress is gorgeous.  Unfortunately, I had a very obvious tan line on my back and didn’t get as many pictures as I would have liked.

What made you decide on the destination/resort/venue?

Tulum, Mexico is one of my most favorite cities in the world.   It is rich in history and color with the most beautiful archaeological site – the Tulum ruins.   The beaches are powdery white and the waters are crystal clear blue.   It’s a refreshing, bohemian alternative to the busy areas of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.   Having been in the destination wedding industry for 10 plus years I have come to know a lot of talented people across the globe.   The management and wedding team at the Dreams Tulum resort have always been hard working and genuinely good people that never cease to amaze me.    While it was a tough decision we decided that the family friendly Dreams Tulum Resort was the best option for us.

What was your vision for your wedding?

The most important thing for me was to marry my best friend surrounded by those who love us.   The beautiful backdrop, dress, flowers and details were just the icing on top.   Zachary and I are fun-loving people so we wanted to reflect that in our wedding design.  We decided to go with a colorful and fun fiesta theme.   No shoes required with a lot of free time and music.

Describe the activities you and your guests enjoyed at your wedding destination.

The night before the wedding we had a fiesta on the beach to welcome everyone with string lights and lightup cocktail tables. Authentic Mexican food, open bar and fun music had everyone enjoying themselves.

What was the biggest difficulty in planning your destination wedding and how did you overcome it?

I think with any wedding – the cost kept getting higher than we wanted so I would cut costs in the areas that were less important to me.

What was the highlight of the experience and what was the biggest surprise?

While we were all dancing and enjoying each others company on the beach – suddenly at least a HUNDRED baby turtles started hatching all around us! We each were able to carry one to the ocean. It was so incredibly magical and perfect. That was definitely the highlight of the weekend for me.

Bride’s attire?

My maid of honor and I found this lovely Maggie Sottero dress from Lulus Bridal Boutique.    Not too heavy or too light.    It worked out pretty well.

Bridesmaids attire?

I’m loving the mismatched bridesmaids trend right now so I gave my girls free range to choose their dress as long as it was long and on the blue/green color wheel.

How well was the resort and your Onsite Wedding Coordinator to work with?

Landy Cahum has become a dear friend of mine through the years and it was a true pleasure working with her on my big day.    She has such a demanding and busy job but she handles it all with such ease and grace.   She’s a blessing.

Did you have any entertainment?

We had a traditional mariachi band provided by the resort in between the ceremony and reception.   It gave it a fun and authentic Mexican vibe.   During the welcome beach party and the reception the resort DJ played my itunes playlists and kept everything on time.

Videographer?

Teo from the resort did a wonderful job on capturing every moment.   The videographer was included in our wedding package and we’re impressed with the quality and that he had it ready the morning after the wedding.

Invitations?

I debated on whether or not to do invitations since Legacy Travel provides amazing complimetary save the date brochures that had all the information on it but we decided to do send some out.   I had a very specific vision on how I wanted them to look and Milan at Paper Affair designed it perfectly.  She rocks.

What food was served at the reception?

A big variety – buffet style.   Since it was a larger group – I wanted to be sure and let everyone relax and eat when they wanted to eat.

23163891730_bf24d36082_z

Did you honeymoon at the resort afterward?

To have some privacy and relax we decided on the small, romantic Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita which wasn’t too far away.

Best memory of the wedding:

My husband tearing up during his vows… oh, and the baby turtles hatching during our reception.
