What made you decide on the destination/resort/venue?

We wanted the wedding to be a source of happiness, and NOT of source of stress.  After looking at options in Chicago and the surrounding area, we realized that having a wedding here was going to be a lot of work.  When we thought about the times we are happiest and most at ease – we remembered… vacation!  Once we decided that we wanted our wedding to feel like a vacation, we really got excited about organizing the trip of a lifetime.  This was our opportunity to get all of our family in friends together, and we don’t regret our decision at all.

What was the highlight of the experience and what was the biggest surprise?

The highlight was seeing all of our family and friends together, really enjoying themselves.  Everyone really got the chance to kick back and relax.  All the luggage we brought there was a shock – it really adds up! 7 bags for a 7 day trip!

If your best friend were planning a destination wedding what would your advice be to her?

Relax… and find ways to make the wedding special!  Our resort had a lot of pre-packaged options, but I noticed that all of the weddings there looked the same.  Get creative with decor (bring things in yourself!), find ways to make your wedding unique to you and reflective of your style.  Don’t be afraid to ask for the things that you want, and think outside of the box.  Give yourself 3-4 days before your first guests arrive to get things in order.  You’ll appreciate being able to spend some stress free time with people!

Was there anything that you would change looking back?

Not trusting my instincts about a wedding cake – we ended up with WAY too much! 🙂

My Husband and I always ventured to have a nontraditional wedding. We wanted to do something “out of the box” and enjoyable. Due to large families a wedding in our hometown of Chicago was far too expensive. We came across Legacy Travel and the rest is history. We loved our agent Nicki. She was very attentive, patient, and knowledgeable. She helped us decide on a resort. We chose the El Dorado Royale in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Surprisingly we had a large group of friends/family attend. That was our biggest concern. We were able to communicate all of our needs via email with the onsite wedding coordinator. That process was simple and easy as I could do all the planning from the comfort of my own home. Upon arrival the resort was absolutely stunning!  The staff was welcoming, pleasant, and extremely helpful.  All of our guest are still talking about what a great time they had. Not only were they able to attend our wedding, but also they were able to relax and enjoy an actual vacation. Words cannot express what a great time we had with all of our loved ones.  The wedding went off without a hitch. Our friends and family were able to dance the night away at our breach reception. It was simply amazing! The sunset was an amazing perk. If I could do it over I wouldn’t change a thing. Be cautious of how windy a reception on the beach can be, bring tons of sunscreen, and lastly HAVE FUN!
